How Pitch Works

Pitch is the rise over a 12-inch run. A 6/12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. Higher pitch = more actual roof area than flat area.

What is a Square?

One roofing square = 100 SF of roof area. Shingles are sold by the bundle — typically 3 bundles per square for standard shingles.

Waste Factor

Simple roofs (few hips/valleys) need ~10% waste. Complex roofs with many angles, dormers, and valleys need 20–25%.
